USB-C PD Hub PCB Design
Budget: €1,500 – €3,000 EUR
I’m ready to move from concept to production on a compact USB 3 hub built around a USB-C upstream port with full Power Delivery negotiation. The board will be connected to a PC and expose two downstream ports, one USB 3 SuperSpeed (5 Gbps) to connect to an industrial camera via flex cable. There is no need for a standard USB connector on this port. The second port is USB 2 and will be used to interface with a RP2350 microcontroller. As of now, the plan is to use a Type A connector and a commercially available RP2350 board. Additionally, the board will supply power from USB PD on a separate terminal to supply non-USB peripherals with 20V fixed voltage.
Core requirements
• Schematic and PCB layout that meet USB 3.x signal-integrity guidelines and USB-PD spec compliance
• Two downstream ports as described
• Integrated over-current and short-circuit protection on every rail
• Good EMI characteristics as the PC to hub connection will be a USB-C cable several meters in length
• An auxiliary header or barrel jack that can tap the PD source so I can power non-USB loads with 20V/3A
• 20V to 5V buck converter to supply the hub's USB ports
I'm open to suggestions for specific ICs, but from my research, the following combination seems promising:
• TUSB8042A hub controller, hub design based on TUSB8044A eval board including EMI filter stage
• TPS25730 for USB PD
• TPSM63606 buck converter to supply 5V to downstream USB ports after USB PD negotiation
Please deliver native project files (KiCad), a fabrication-ready Gerber set, pick-and-place data, a complete BOM with supplier links, and any firmware or configuration files required for the PD controller or USB hub IC. I’ll be reviewing signal-integrity considerations (differential-pair routing, impedance control, return path) and expect test points for lab validation.
If you’ve shipped USB-PD hardware before, show me a snapshot or reference so we can hit the ground running—once the design passes a quick DRC/ERC review I’ll order a prototype run and keep you onboard for bring-up support.
