PCB Design for DC/DC Power Supply
Budget: £20 – £250 GBP
Introduction
We are using a half-brick DC/DC converter power supply, which is designed to be soldered into a PCB.
We need a PCB designed with screw terminals to allow the wired input and output connections, to accept 2.5mm squared wires, as well as some internal links and mounting of components.
Attached are some images of example (out of production) PCBs found online, as well as a stripboard version that has been used for prototyping.
Mounting
We are using one of these enclosures, which has a separate metal plate to mount the components to. We will have a DIN Rail inside to mount terminal blocks etc. to. https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/general-purpose-enclosures/0506081
The PCB will either be mounted onto the DIN rail, or the metal base plate of the enclosure, whichever you think would be most suitable.
The DC/DC should be situated with its heatsink facing upwards.
Provision of the board design needs to be made for the mounting of the PCB, DC/DC & heatsink assembly.
Connections
Section 5 of the Applications Notes has information on the PCB design. See attached file: CHB200W12-72S-Application-notes-V10.pdf
The required connections are as follows - refer to Section 2 of the Application Notes for a diagram & description):
- Vin & Vout terminal connections (Pins 1,6,7 & 11)
- Pin 7 to Pin 8
- Pin 10 to Pin 11
- A capacitor between pin 6 & pin 5 (the specified 240uF VISHAY 118 AHT is no longer available. I was advised to use one of these by the DC/DC supplier: https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/aluminium-capacitors/7111734).
- A capacitor between output pins 7 & 11- Something like this https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/aluminium-capacitors/1701238
Terminals
Screw terminals should be provided for the Vin & Vout connections (4 terminals in total). These must be able to accept 2.5mm square wires terminated with ferrules.
