Pardot API v4 - use email as identifier

We are having issues setting up an API on pardot using v4. We need to tell it to use the email address as the unique identifier so as we are not creating new records every time. I’m looking for a freelancer who can help us to create an API on v4 which uses the email address to lookup existing records.
