I need a single, well-integrated program that protects a small-to-medium local network and lets me see exactly what is happening on it at any moment. The core security layer must focus on two capabilities: real-time intrusion detection that can flag suspicious packets or behaviour before damage is done, and built-in data encryption so information travelling inside the LAN or leaving it through defined gateways stays unreadable to unauthorised parties.

Alongside those defences, the same application has to give me actionable network intelligence. I want to track live and historical traffic patterns, drill down into individual user activity, and measure performance metrics such as latency, throughput, and error rates. All of this should surface through a clean desktop interface that runs on Windows; cross-platform support (macOS or Linux) would be a welcome bonus but is not mandatory as long as Windows functionality is rock-solid.

Preferred stack and workflow are open—Python (e.g., leveraging Scapy, Zeek, or PyShark), C# (.NET), or Java are all fine. If you plan to integrate existing open-source IDS engines like Snort or Suricata, outline how you’ll wrap them in the desktop UI and handle rule updates. An embedded database or flat-file logging mechanism is also needed for storing events and statistics.
