Background

The client provides remote radiology reporting services to hospitals. The platform includes PACS, DICOM image handling, a web portal, and radiology viewers. Medical imaging data and patient information must be handled securely and reliably.

The organisation is transitioning to Microsoft Azure and does not currently have in-house cloud expertise.

Scope of Work

The consultant will design and implement a secure, production-ready Azure environment using virtual machines.

Key Requirements

Azure Foundation

Azure subscription and billing setup

Role-based access control (RBAC)

Naming, tagging, and cost visibility

Network & Security

Secure VNet design (hub-and-spoke or equivalent)

Subnets for web/app, PACS, and data tiers

No direct public access to VMs

Secure admin access (Azure Bastion or VPN)

Network Security Groups and basic hardening

Compute (VM-based)

Linux VMs for PACS (e.g. dcm4chee)

Database VM or managed database (where appropriate)

Web/application VM(s) for portal and OHIF viewer

Guidance on VM sizing and disk selection

Data Protection & Reliability

VM backups using Azure Backup

Monitoring and alerting (Azure Monitor / Log Analytics)

Basic disaster recovery considerations

Documentation & Handover

Architecture diagram

Written documentation explaining the environment
