In this lab you will design the virtualization infrastructure for an organization based on an analysis of the
organization’s current applications running on standalone physical servers. The results of the analysis are
summarized in the table at the end of this document.
Senior management have instructed you to submit to them the capacity requirements required for the new
virtual environment, building in 10% growth and 1 additional host to allow for continuous operation in the
event that 1 host should fail. Your boss would also like you to show a breakdown for the Business Unit
Managers of their own requirements for this new environment. In this instance, “Business Unit” is equivalent
to “Workload”.
There are no plans at the current time to virtualize any other servers except for those listed in the table.
REQUIREMENTS:
You are to prepare a single Microsoft Word document containing your design which must include:
1) Your name, student number, course number and lab number
2) A brief overview that describes your design in non-technical terms
3) Details on the determination of the number of hosts required to virtualize the existing physical
environment, including:
a. Computations to show the number of cores per Business Unit required.
b. Computations to show the amount of memory per Business Unit required, including the
memory required by the hypervisor itself.
c. Computations to show the amount for storage per Business Unit required.
d. Computations to support the total number of hosts required based on the amount of virtual
CPU and memory.
e. Computations to determine the amount of guest storage required
f. A recommendation on the amount of local disk needed in each host
g. A recommendation on the networking requirements for the virtualized environment
4) A high-level design diagram of the virtualization infrastructure you have designed. This diagram does
not need to show all details, in particular, not all hosts need to be shown. This diagram can be created
in your favorite technical drawing tool and then inserted into the document.

YOU CAN ASSUME THE FOLLOWING:
1. The hypervisor to be used is Microsoft Hyper-V 2016
2. The number of virtual cores per physical core is not to exceed the number of virtual cores available
using hyper threading. (processors * cores * threads)
3. Each host will have an identical specification.
a. The processors are 2 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2640 v4 @ 2.40GHz
b. The memory in each host will be 256GB
c. Each host has 2 x 1Gbps Ethernet connectors on the mother board
d. In addition, each host will have an additional 4 x 10Gbps Ethernet connections (2 separate
adapters)
4. Network devices (switches, routers, etc.) will be provided by the organization’s networking team
5. The network team will create the specifications for them and determine cabling requirements based
on what you tell them is required
6. The SAN Team will create the number of datastores / Luns you need for guest storage. Assume you
require mirrored storage for everything and that you required an additional 15% of the total for
snapshots and other guest definition files.
7. You are not responsible for determining costs, someone else will do it later
