Job Description
We are looking for an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) with strong expertise in Amazon RDS (MySQL) and Laravel to help optimize and secure our cloud-hosted database infrastructure.
Our Laravel-based web application is deployed on AWS EC2 and uses RDS for MySQL. We are undertaking a focused initiative to enhance database performance, tighten security controls, and ensure long-term scalability and resilience. You will work alongside our development team to implement best practices, tune the database engine, and deliver documented procedures for ongoing maintenance.
Project Deliverables
Your work will involve a clearly defined set of technical tasks aimed at improving speed, security, and reliability.
Security & Access Control
Configure RDS instance to disallow public access (VPC-only)
Rotate and secure database credentials; update Laravel .env
Enforce SSL/TLS for database connections from Laravel
Restrict DB users to minimal privileges; remove unused accounts
Apply security groups that only allow access from trusted VPC subnets or EC2 instances
Ensure RDS encryption at rest (AES-256 with KMS) is in place
Monitoring & Auditing
Enable general logs, slow query logs, and Enhanced Monitoring
Configure CloudWatch dashboards and alarms for key metrics
Integrate CloudTrail and GuardDuty to detect unusual activity
Performance Optimization
Review schema and optimize indexing strategies
Analyze and refactor slow or inefficient queries
Implement query caching strategies where appropriate
Profile Laravel database interactions to resolve N+1 issues
Backup & Recovery Planning
Validate automated snapshot backups and retention settings
Test and document point-in-time recovery procedures
Recommend optional backup strategies (e.g., mysqldump to encrypted S3)
Documentation & Reporting
Deliver a complete Database Security & Operations SOP including:
User access policies
Backup and restore procedures
Credential rotation and secrets handling
Provide a Database Optimization Report
Share a visual architecture diagram of DB connectivity
