moodle upgrade

I am looking to upgrade my Moodle site, which is currently on version 2.6. I want to upgrade to the latest version of Moodle and understand that I need to create a backup of my current site before doing so. I am looking for someone who has experience providing Moodle upgrades to help me make this transition in the most effective and efficient way possible.
