Server slowness and connectivity issues

We have two dedicated servers currently hosted by Claranet.
One machine we use for our SQL database and the other for our website files.
We run a few other bespoke programs on these machines.
Over the last few months we have been having issues with our website being down or very slow, us not being able to connect using SQL enterprise manager.
The servers are pretty old but have been pretty reliable and after a few days of the problems above things go back to normal so it doesn't feel simply like old tech but maybe something is using up our connection or bandwidth. We are a very small company and have just recently lost our long-standing IT guy who would normally deal with this. Claranet had been unable to identify the cause of the problem.
It is seriously affecting our customers and we need a resolution ASAP and are looking for urgent expert help.
