Help shrinking Microsoft SQL transaction log

The transaction log on our Microsoft SQL Server has grown out of control. I am not a SQL expert and after trying several ways to shrink the log file using SSMS, I am now seeking help from someone who is familiar with tuning Microsoft SQL servers. I would like help shrinking the log file and also setting up a weekly maintenance job to index, shrink logs, and backup our databases.
