Fix SQL Table problem

I have an MSSQL database on Azure.
I am unable to change a table due to the following error.
Warning: The table "matter" has been created, but its maximum row size exceeds the allowed maximum of 8060 bytes. INSERT or UPDATE to this table will fail if the resulting row exceeds the size limit.
Msg 511, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot create a row of size 8069 which is greater than the allowable maximum row size of 8060.
The statement has been terminated.
I have tries to reduce the size of the row by reducing fixed field sizes but it will not run any of the alter table commands.
There are many fields I can reduce the size of if I can get past this error.
