Help me troubleshoot .msg files that will not open in Microsoft Outlook

Hi, I bought Microsoft Outlook an hour ago but I still cannot open .msg files I have saved to my computer (these are not my emails, they were given to me and I want to read them now). There is no error message, they just don't open. If I do get them to open, they are unreadable. I know my colleague has read them, so there is nothing wrong with them (although there might be a version issue, maybe they were created with an old version of Outlook).

Microsoft is zero help. Can someone who knows a lot about computers/outlook help?
