This is Isaac Gavli from India , I have a Bachelor's degree in Microbiology and currently working with a spice company. As a hobby and passion to breed chickens at home .I have lovely ideas on getting some extra income for people who really love to have chickens I have an experience over 25 years in chicken breeding. I can give you the startup ideas as to how to select a breed and its cultivation . This depends on your purpose to keep chickens . There may be various reason like having eggs , meat for both domestic consumption and commercial purpose . One can have the eggs consumed at home and sold out in the market if it is really organic in nature,nowadays we have a huge demand for the organic eggs in the market as the breeders are less. If we have a big lot of chickens we can have good quantity of eggs which can fetch you a good amount of money. This can be a very good investment for people with agricultural land and have enough space to have a shed to keep these chickens . Before we start our topic we have to check for the availability of all the below parameters so that our project is a success and doesn't has further distractions.
1. Availability of a good space
2. Availability of a local veterinarian doctor.
3. Availability of Medicines and feed.
4. Proper fence and shed for the chickens to avoid predators
5. Water source.
6. Cleaning equipment and disinfectants.
7. Feeding and Drinking system
8. Reliable person trained for the job (Caretaker) for hatching at home (Optional)
9. Proper electric supply to install brooders for chickens.
10. home made or professional Incubators
These are some of the basic points that a chicken small scale startup needs so that he can properly take care of the chickens .
we can breed chickens available in the market as per our requirement as I have said earlier
you can go for breeds such as Rhode Island Red which is a dual purpose breed for both eggs and meat . a Rhode Island red hen can give on an average of 250 - 300 eggs in a year and 5 to 6 eggs per week .
farmers have been profited by the brownish eggs this breed lays which is having a great habitability rate for home production .I have personally breed over 350 hens in a single lot and had an average weight of 2.5 kg for each bird. I used to have free range grazing chickens and then feed them with grains and some protein supplements via water. So this is my personal experience for Rhode Island red that they are tough and steady birds with good immunity to fight the diseases as they also need the basic vaccinations. we need to have Marek's vaccine when they are 1 day old at the hatchery and other vaccines as per the vaccinations on the 5th-7th day with RDV F1 vaccine . We need to chose the hatchery very keenly as the total investment may go waste if we do not get the original breed . Make sure the breeder is well known and certified for our assurance One of my friend was deceived with a local breed for Rhode Island red chicks. The original chicks will be red to dark copper brown color and their beaks yellow and brown at the tip.This is one of the way you can Identify the original breed. Next is to get the vaccination done by the locally available vet. He will be present on the dates as per the schedule for the vaccination of the chickens.
The chickens need to be kept under a brooder with the bottom with rice covers of wood shavings in order to keep them dry and worm as they have in their mothers body.The chickens shall be feed with pre-starter feed in the starting 4 -7 days then starter feed and then finisher. we can do the process of culling , which means removing of excess males . if we want to keep the chickens for eggs we may keep 1 cock and 5 hens for breeding and proper eggs . We can free graze them if you have space within the fence to avoid predators when they are about 2..3 weeks old . they will require less feed if we free graze them. We can sell eggs & chicken both using Rhode Island.
