I am seeking an experienced freelance editor to partner with me on a high-impact trade nonfiction / political memoir. This is not a ghostwriting project—the manuscript is written. The work ahead is about shaping, strengthening, and refining what is already on the page while preserving a distinct, culturally grounded voice.
THE CONCEPT & AUDIENCE
This book traces my journey from the housing projects of the Bronx to the halls of Congress as the first person of color to represent New York’s 16th Congressional District. It sits at the intersection of:
Political memoir
Movement politics and systems critique
Education reform (with a focus on decolonized and restorative frameworks)
Personal narrative grounded in hip-hop culture and community storytelling
At its core, this is a trade book designed to be read for enjoyment. My life story contains action, grief, discovery, failure, triumph, humor, and music—and I want readers to feel momentum as they move through it.
The book is written for a 2026 attention economy: rhythmic, scene-driven, and cinematic. It is intended to function both as a compelling general-interest read and as a shared text that can be used in education, organizing, and campaign spaces.
STYLE & PHILOSOPHY
The voice is influenced by hip-hop cadence and oral storytelling traditions. I write with forward motion and intention.
I am looking for an editor who can:
Preserve the voice: The work should not be neutralized, academicized, or flattened. Cultural specificity and rhythm are essential.
Support structure: Help strengthen the arc from personal and systemic trauma toward collective clarity and possibility.
Balance pacing and intimacy: Identify moments where the narrative would benefit from deeper emotional grounding, and others where compression strengthens impact.
The manuscript favors vivid scenes and “showing rather than telling,” trusting readers to participate emotionally and cognitively. The goal is not to slow the book down, but to ensure readers are fully carried through it.
EDITORIAL SCOPE & TIMELINE
I am operating on a disciplined timeline to support a fall 2026 release and a robust pre-order campaign.
February 15: Developmental/structural editing begins
March 5: Completion of a polished “Vanguard Reviewer Draft” (endorsement-ready version)
March–April: Phased line editing and refinement
Mid-April: Final files prepared for ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) production
The process can be phased, but the March 5 milestone is especially important.
WHAT I AM LOOKING FOR IN AN EDITOR
The ideal editor has experience with trade nonfiction or political memoir and is comfortable working with strong, unconventional voices.
Specifically, I am seeking someone who can:
Assess narrative pacing and emotional access
Provide concrete, actionable feedback (editorial letter + margin notes preferred)
Help clarify structure at the chapter and section level
Maintain momentum while deepening resonance
Collaborate thoughtfully and respectfully
Cultural fluency and respect for voice matter more to me than stylistic conformity.
WHAT THIS IS NOT
This is not:
A copyedit-only or proofreading job
A rewrite into a conventional or academic voice
A project requiring invention of material
A ghostwriting engagement
