As I began to think about my future, I realized that what I had learned in school would allow me to silence what had silenced my grandmother. However, I did not focus on learning per se, but with good grades and high test scores.
I began to believe that academic perfection was the only way to extricate myself in her eyes - to make up for what I had not done as his grandson. However, a simple walk on the hiking trail behind my house made me open my eyes to the truth.
Over the years, everything—even honoring my grandmother—has become second only to school and classes.
As my shoes humbly tapped on the ground, the tall trees blackened by a forest fire some years ago, the faint colored pebbles embedded in the sidewalk, and the faint white clouds hanging in the sky remind me of a small albeit nonetheless important part in all the greater humanity and this earth.
Before I could solve my guilt, I had to broaden my view of the world as well as my responsibilities to my fellow human beings. Volunteering at a cancer treatment center helped me find my way.
When I see patients who are trapped not only in the hospital but also in time due to their illnesses, I speak to them. For six hours a day, three times a week, Ivana is surrounded by IV wards, blank walls, and crowded nurses working to quietly remind her of breast cancer.
Her face is pale and tired, and yet gentle - not unlike that of my grandmother's. I just want to smile and say hello to see her shine as life comes back to her face. Upon our first meeting, she opened up about her two sons, her hometown, and knitting group — without mentioning her illness.
Even without standing up, the three of us - Ivana and my grandmother - walked together. Cancer, as powerful and indomitable as it may sound, is just a small part of human life. It is easy to forget when one's mind and body are so weak and vulnerable.
I want to be there as an oncologist to remind them to take a walk every once in a while, to be reminded that there is a lot more in life than disease.
As I physically treat their cancer, I want to offer patients the emotional support and mental strength to escape the interruption and continue living. Through my work, I can accept the shovel without burying my grandmother's memory
