Metallurgical Engineer - Aluminum 5000 serie for marine use
Budget: $8 – $15 USD
Hi,
I need help to choose a suitable aluminum for a project that i have.
I have designed a chassis for a heavy but still movable marin testing machine with 5052-H38 (Yield >255) But it seems that H38 temper is impossible to find in stock locally or in China in the small qty we need (2.1 tons). We can get it made for us nut MOQ is 12 tons.
Now i have been offered 5083 with similar yield strength but we can read that it may have problems with stress cracking and age softening. I have very little to no knowledge in material science and therefor i need some help from a metallurgical engineer.
How it is going to be used:
1mm and 3mm sheet metal, Laser cut and 3mm thickness is TIG-welded and 1mm is laser welded.
In a marine environment wit risk for salt water spray.
in a 25-36 degree C environment.
Will have cyclic on and off loading 2 times per day with stress concentration cycling between 0-100MPa.
Will be bent with a radius of thickness x3 in all grain directions.
Will use PEM self-clinching nuts, (CLA and SOA) made of 7075-T6 due to the sheets hardness. They are hard anodized as extra corrosion protection of the 7075-T6 material.
All other fasteners will be made of 6061-T6 also hard anodized (minimizing galvanic corrosion)
Questions:
What readily available aluminum sheet material is most suitable for us (my own research says 5059-H321/H116 but it is impossible to find)
Will the PEM self-clinching nuts (CLA and SOA) crack the sheet metal?
