Mechanical Engineer for Design of Magnets and Cams in a Coupling in a Vacuum Line

Job ID: 39338637

Budget: $250 – $750 USD

A. The Concept:
A concept has been developed for a magnetic quick connect for use in the temporary connection of a hose in a vacuum line. The concept entails two hubs, each with embedded magnets, which when aligned and juxtaposed, make and maintain the connection of two tubes. Each of the hubs have an array of cams which nest when the hubs are connected. Side by side with the cams are disc magnets, two for each cam, embedded in the faces of the two hubs. (For example, if there are four cams on each of the hubs, there would be sixteen total magnets.) To disengage, the two hubs are counter-rotated which produce two forces. First, the lever action produced by the cams of one hub working against the other produce mechanical forces that surpass the magnetic forces, thereby forcing the hubs apart. Second, the counter-rotation of one hub relative to the other draws the magnets into a N-N and S-S alignment, thus producing repelling magnetic forces that likewise push the hubs apart.
B. Qualifications and Experience:
This post is to invite interest of a mechanical engineer with:
1. A proficiency in Solidworks to include graphic simulation and FEA.
2. Experience in the use of magnets in a mechanical application.
C. Work to Be Done (with an initial focus on a connection for a four-inch vacuum line):
1. Specify permanent disc magnets with axial polarity required to maintain a seal of a vacuum line with a range of diameters of 2.5" to 8.0" under assumed pull forces.
2. Specify the optimum arrangement of such magnets in a circular array around the perimeters of the matching faces of the hubs.
3. Determine the lever action of nested cams in the profile of a sine wave needed to break the axial magnetic forces.
4. Specify the optimum side-by-side arrangement of cams and magnets.
5. In connection with specification of magnets, take into account certain assumptions of the optimum manual forces needed to rotate one hub against the other.
6. Confirm the assumptions for cam dimensions and advise any changes to achieve optimum.
7. With the aid of graphic simulation and FED analysis, create CAM drawings for production of magnetic quick connections for tubes with internal diameters of 2.5, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 8.0 inches.
