Livestock GPS Tracker Enclosure Design

Job ID: 39575213

Budget: $1,500 – $3,000 USD

Description:

We are seeking an experienced China, Shenzhen based Mechanical engineer to help us design a rugged housing, with emphasis on battery and SIM card compartments for a livestock GPS tracker. The solution must be user-friendly for outdoor users such as farmers, herders, and hunters, and robust enough to endure harsh environments and rough handling by animals.

Project Goal:
Design a dedicated, easily accessible battery and SIM compartment for a GPS tracking device used on large and small livestock (e.g., cattle, reindeer, horses, sheep, goats, and hunting dogs). The compartment must allow quick, tool-less access in the field while maintaining a high degree of durability and protection (IP68 rating).

Key Requirements:

Accessibility:
• Separate battery/SIM compartment accessible without full device disassembly
• Access via tool-less latch, twist-lock, or quick-release

mechanism
• Must be operable with gloved hands and in low-visibility outdoor conditions
• No small screws or fine motor requirements

Tamper Resistance:
• Prevent accidental opening from animal movement, scratching, or impacts
• Mechanism must strike a balance between user accessibility and tamper resistance

Environmental Protection:
• When closed, the compartment must maintain IP68 water and dust resistance
• Must function reliably in wet, snowy, muddy, and forested environments

Efficiency:
• Battery replacement must take no more than 30 seconds on average
• All other internal electronics must remain sealed and protected
• Unauthorized opening of internal electronics must void warranty and leave visible tamper evidence
Durability Requirements:
• Must function in temperatures from -40°C to +50°C
• Withstand mechanical wear, impact, animal chewing, and

rough environments
• Compartment must endure at least 500 open/close cycles while retaining IP68 rating

Material Guidelines:
• Housing must be UV-resistant, non-brittle in sub-zero conditions, and resistant to saliva and chewing
• Preferred materials include aramid, fiberglass composites, or equivalent ruggedized polymers

Deliverables:
• Concept design sketches and production CAD files
• Material recommendations with rationale
• Detailed mechanism description for latch/closure
• Design for manufacturing (DFM) considerations
• IP68 sealing strategy documentation

Ideal Candidate:
• Preferably based in Shenzhen, China
• Proven experience designing rugged outdoor electronics or enclosures
• Background in mechanical or industrial design, preferably with IP-rated products
• Familiarity with DFM, tamper-resistant designs, and animal-wearable devices is a plus
• Ability to iterate quickly and deliver field-practical solutions
To Apply:
Please share:
• Relevant portfolio examples (preferably IP-rated or outdoor electronics enclosures)
• A brief explanation of how you would approach the latch and seal design
• Estimated timeline for initial concepts and revisions
