Project Overview
I am seeking a mechanical designer or technical illustrator to "reverse engineer" a 1914 outboard steam engine into a modern set of technical drawings. This project requires interpreting historical photographs and labeled arrangement diagrams to create a cohesive mechanical layout.
The Subject
• Engine: H.E. Morriss’ 1895/1914 Portable Steam Outboard.
• Key Specs: Two-cylinder brass engine ($1.835" \times 1.875"$), Stephenson link motion, internal oil bath, and a specialized vertical mono-tube boiler.
Materials Provided
• Scans of the original 1914 Model Engineer article.
• A complete key of 21 labeled components (condensers, pumps, lubricators, etc.).
Deliverables Needed
1. General Arrangement (GA) Drawing: A clean, multi-view (front, side, top) line drawing of the full unit.
2. Internal Schematic: A cutaway or "ghosted" view showing the engine’s placement inside the casing and the drive-rod connection to the propeller.
3. Component Breakdown: Individual call-outs for the Stephenson link motion and the burner/superheater assembly.
4. (Optional/Preferred): A simplified 3D CAD model (STEP or STL) that proves the mechanical clearance of the moving parts.
Ideal Freelancer
• Experience in Industrial Archaeology or Vintage Machinery reconstruction.
• Strong proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360) or technical illustration (Adobe Illustrator).
• Ability to read handwritten or vintage technical labels and translate them into modern terminology.
