Virtual CMO

Job ID: 34556590

Budget: $25 – $50 AUD

I’m looking for a marketing manager to help me grow my IT consulting business.

I’m a full-time consultant based in Australia providing IT consulting services to small and medium-sized companies. I’m looking to develop and implement a marketing plan to grow the quantity and quality of the work that I do. Almost all of my work is done remotely and my clients run the gamut from solo entrepreneurs to growing companies. My work focused on business planning and strategy.

I’ve done almost all of my marketing myself and I’m up against the limits of my expertise. Here’s a little more about this project.

Goal

The goal of this project is to develop a marketing plan that can be used to grow my business. Once that plan is developed, I’ll also be looking for assistance in executing the plan. If the person who develops the plan can execute it as well, that would be great. I believe that the best way to do this is to do the work to create a plan first, before moving forward.

Profile

I’m usually on the other side of the Upwork process, so I have a pretty good idea of what I’m looking for in a consultant. The consultant will have the following characteristics:

Smart - I work best with people who know what they are doing and can think quickly.

Honesty - If you see something that you think is not done well, or needs to be done better, tell me. I’m hiring someone who is an expert in what they do and I value that expertise. If you’re hired for this project, don’t be afraid “to speak truth to power”.

Experience - I expect that you know what you’re doing and have done this before. This doesn’t mean I expect you to have experience marketing my specific kind of consulting to my target market (although that would be great). It does mean that you need to have experience working on projects that are similar.

Sense of Humor - The best work is done in a focused manner, with a sense of humor along the way.

Interactive Work Style - I don’t expect you to go off and come back with a complete plan. I find it works best if you make some progress, we discuss it, and they you continue. Thing agile more than waterfall.

Able to brainstorm and work through ideas - I’m very open to the best way(s) to do this, but you’ll need to be able to make a strong case. You’ll need to tell me why you think something is a good idea and respond to my questions and suggestions.

Project Structure

I have an idea of how this will work best, but I’m very open to your suggestions. I’d like to start off with a review of what I’m doing now including web site, profile, proposal structure, etc. You can use that as a baseline to get to know me and what I do.

I’d then like to lock down my branding, positioning, and offerings going forward. I have done a ton of work on this and have my ideas of what will work, but your expertise is needed.

From there, I’d like you to create a plan to improve what already in place, get rid of what isn’t working, and develop the new material needed. If you can also execute the plan, a timeline to make that happen is needed as well.

Budget and Timeline

I believe that talented people are worth the money they charge, so don’t be hesitant to bid what you think you’re worth. As part of the screening process, I’ll want you to share with me why you’re worth what you charge and give me examples of your success in the past. I’d like to get this project done in the next few weeks. As far as time spent by the consultant I hire, my initial thoughts are that it will take plus or minus 10 hours of your time. If I’m wrong on that, let me know.

Process

From being on the other side, I know it can be frustrating to send out tons of proposals and hear nothing. I don’t expect you to spend half an hour to respond to my project, but I would like you to personalize your response. I guarantee you that I will read every one I receive and you will hear back from me, even if it just to tell you that you’re not a good fit.
