Fishing Boat Engine Design Project
Budget: $250 – $750 USD
This project involves designing a brand-new marine propulsion engine in the 100–300 HP class for a small commercial fishing boat. The key objective is to create a reliable, fuel-efficient power plant that can handle long hours at steady load while remaining easy to service in port or at sea.
Scope of work
• Translate the vessel’s operating profile—predominantly low-to-mid-range cruising with frequent idle periods—into clear performance targets for torque, RPM, and specific fuel consumption.
• Develop the full engine concept: cycle selection (four-stroke diesel or other practical solution), cylinder configuration, cooling and lubrication systems, and exhaust treatment that meets current maritime emissions standards.
• Provide detailed deliverables: 3D CAD assembly, annotated engineering drawings, performance curves, preliminary bill of materials, and a concise maintenance schedule.
• Document assumptions, calculations, and any classification-society or IMO/EPA compliance references so they can be reviewed by our naval architect before we move to prototyping.
Acceptance
The design is considered complete when the CAD package, drawings, and calculation dossier clearly demonstrate that the engine will deliver between 100 HP and 300 HP within the stated duty cycle, fit within a standard fishing-boat engine compartment, and meet the cited emissions and safety requirements.
