Task 1: Manufacturing Plan (max 4000 words)
The Product
This section should describe the chosen product and its main components. (Weighting: 15%, ~500 words)
Include:
Product description, using shape hierarchy.
Sketch/drawing with key dimensions.
Outline Product Design Specification (PDS) covering performance, environment, quantity, and market constraints (adapted from TMA 03).
Statement, with justification, on whether engineering or industrial design has played the most significant role.
Manufacturing Analysis
Investigate manufacturing processes and materials for each main component. Consider several options before justifying final choices against the PDS. (Weighting: 40%, ~2500 words)
Include:
Primary manufacturing process for each main component (options + justification).
Material choice for each main component (options + justification).
How selected processes affect microstructure/macrostructure and product performance.
Secondary processing and surface engineering needs.
System diagram showing the sequence of manufacturing operations for each component.
Manufacturing and Quality Management
Propose how manufacturing engineering management (MEM) applies to high-volume production of the product. (Weighting: 20%, ~1000 words)
Include:
How MEM can manage production variations and enable mass customisation.
Three key variables and three product-specific attributes for quality assurance, with justification and measurement methods.
DMAIC plan for setup, including examples of key factors and how they are managed to improve quality.
