Repair Magento 2.4.3 installation

Our Magento 2 installation has broken and after several weeks of trying different solutions we dont seem to be able to repair the problem.
We had the installation working but product images would not show unless the cache was cleared - then they would show only once. Obviously there is something wrong with the cache.
Our images all show as a 404 - the path is not including pub/ in it.
