Need an AI that can count simple objects in an image reliably

I have a set of images which are sadly low resolution.
These images contain a number of stones. Some of them are occluded my other stones.
I need a reliable AI or algorithm to count those stones.
I'll attach an example image to this post.
The counting process itself shouldn't take more than 1 second.
