Alpha Omega symptoms assessment algorithm development project
Budget: $5,000 – $10,000 USD
Alpha Omega is a medical company that produces products for treating Parkinson Disease (PD) patients.
A PD patient suffers from movement disorder symptoms as:
• Tremor (trembling) in hands, arms, legs, jaw, or head
• Stiffness of the limbs and trunk
• Slowness of movement
• Impaired balance and coordination, sometimes leading to falls.
One of our projects is to provide a capability to track those symptoms while the patient is at home. For that we use the movement sensor that is inside the patient’s smartphone which is called IMU – An Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) is a device that can measure and report specific gravity and angular rate of an object to which it is attached. An IMU typically consists of:
• Gyroscopes: providing a measure angular rate
• Accelerometers: providing a measure specific force/acceleration
Some of PD patients suffer from Dysarthria - hard to pronounce and blur voice. Sometimes their voice will become weaker and weaker as they speak.
The idea is that the patient holds his smartphone and is required to do some tasks:
• The angular rate and the acceleration are recorded and this data can be processed to detect the symptom’s severity.
• Record patient voice when they are required to speak some simple words and number counting.
• Continuous smartphone screen object(s) tapping and record the tapping interval.
The project is to develop algorithms in Matlab or in Python which can identify the symptoms severity.
• You will get 20 or so recorded IMU/voice/series interval data from patients for each of the above 4 symptoms .
• You will also get the doctor’s assessment of the severity of each symptom.
• You will get theoretical material which suggests the mathematical theory behind each symptom.
• You will have to develop an algorithm that processes the data and identifies the symptom’s severity. The algorithm results should have high correlation with the doctor’s assessment (>80%).
To do this project , you should have:
• Good expertise in digital signal processing functions and theories e.g. filtering, FFT, power spectrum, correlation,,,.
• Good expertise in audio analysis( volume, tone)
• High expertise in Matlab or Python.
• Good coding skills.
• Machine learning expertise.
