I have a true story to be written, concerning my great grandmother; in 1939 she came from Australia to the UK for 6 weeks, to visit her daughter (my gran). War broke out, and she was stuck here for 5 years. After the war, transport networks were disrupted, so she had to find another way to get home. A solution presented itself: an entrepreneur had bought a decommissioned minesweeper, a small warship notably unstable in a seaway. She gathered a few others in her situation (she was 72 years old....) and they set off for Cape Town. A day out to sea, they realised that the 'captain' was a drunk, who knew little of navigation, and the ship was rotten. They limped to Freetown, Sierra Leone, whereupon the skipper absconded with most of the cash! After a conference, these indomitable ladies decided they must carry on, and learn to run the ship as they went. They made it to CT, where they took ship to Australia.
A great, trus story which could make a fabulous film - indomitable elderly ladies finding a way throiugh in adversity! I'd like to write it, but I don't have time....could be a great comedic, feel-good novel.
