Just a short note from you will suffice.
I am seeking an experienced freelancer to replace the network driver for my Debian 12/Proxmox 8.4 setup. The current driver for the Realtek RTL8111/8168/8411 network adapter is not functioning, and I need a reliable solution to ensure proper network connectivity.
Key Requirements:
- Expertise in Debian 12 and Proxmox (!) environments
- Knowledgeable with replacing the builtin Debian driver r8169 with the correct one r8168
- Ensure stable and reliable network performance post-replacement
- After replacement give short hint of how to easily backup an existing VM from another Proxmox node and restore it to this new one (nodes are not combined).
Ideal Skills and Experience:
- Strong background in Linux system administration
- Familiarity with network driver installation and configuration
- Problem-solving skills to address driver compatibility issues
- Professional experience with Proxmox
If everything works well, there are followup projects with your expertise — for example the next project will be replacing an nvme-disk of of one proxmox server with one or two other (bigger) ones. That’s why, in this project, professional knowledge of Proxmox is required.
What I have done so far:
· Started the machine with a usb network adapter
· Established ssh connection
· Downloaded new r8168 driver from Realtek and tried to compile it (installed "make" for this purpose, but didn't work with error: "/lib/modules/6.8.12-9-pve/build: No such file or directory. Stop."
Then, I tried another route:
· Installed dkms
· Downloaded package from Debian website: r8168-dkms_8.055.00-1_all.deb and extracted it
· apt install r8125-dkms -- with success
To Do:
• Now, the old driver r8169 needs to be replaced with the new one r8168
• in a way, that it will still work after a kernel update
• a short test after removing the usb network adapter
• I need a short hint about backing up of a vm from another node to this new one.
Time estimate
For a knowledgeable professional, this should take no more than 15-30 minutes. Therefore this project budget is fixed at USD 25-30. If everything is fine, there will be followup projects.
Project start
· Immediately -- give me 1-2 hrs to choose you.
Computer model: Optiplex 3070
Thanks a lot! Looking forward to work with you!
