Personal data recovery

I'm an Ubuntu personal user. My laptop died (fried battery), but I have the SSD mounted on a HDD slot on a desktop, booted to Ubuntu from a USB. I need to recover the data to a separate laptop, probably by an external NTFS drive, but don't have the skills to manage the permissions.

I would also like help troubleshooting a Network card works fine under Windows, but is "not working" under Ubuntu (dual boot).

Preferably start now.
