Guide through Penetration Testing

The task is very simple, you will install a given ubuntu server-based system on VMware on your Linux.
and then you will retrieve some information like IP, and hack the given users ( 3 users and 1 root admin )
using methods like Nmap, Reverse shells, Privilege escalation, Boot-to-Root CTF.
What I want is to guide me in doing these steps with myself.
