Fix Kubuntu-Brother Scanner Link
Budget: $15 – $25 USD
My Kubuntu desktop can print to the Brother MFC-8710DW over the local network without trouble, yet every scanning app (Simple-Scan, XSane, gscan2pdf) reports that no scanner is present. I need the scanner portion of that same device to be detected and usable.
What I already know
• The printer side is fine; only the scanner refuses to appear.
• I’m unsure whether the latest Brother or SANE back-end packages are in place.
• The unit is reachable on the LAN and its web interface loads, so networking itself is not the culprit.
What I need from you
• Identify the missing piece—be it driver (brscan4/brscan5), SANE configuration, firewall rule, or CUPS/SANE-air-scan tweak—and implement or document the fix.
• Verify that the scanner shows up in scanimage -L and works end-to-end in at least one GUI tool.
• Leave a short set of steps so I can reproduce the configuration after a future OS upgrade.
You are free to work via SSH or a screen-sharing session; whichever is easiest. Once the scanner successfully captures and saves a test page from Kubuntu, the job is done.
