Debian Script to run several commands

I am updating firmware on several hundred Debian boxes. I need a Script to execute the upgrade commands some of which need variables typed in after executed. I would also be nice to take any outputs and log them to a file and then as a part of the script have it upload the file to a FTP server. I have some of this working I just don't have time to learn bash scripts right now.
