I need a paralegal specialist

Hi, I rent a house in Scarborough, Toronto, and about two months ago I allowed a flat-broke friend and his girlfriend to live in my house for a while but now I'm having trouble getting them to leave. After multiple quarrels, they have found an apartment that they would like to rent and then move out of my house but they have no money to pay for first and last 5 months' rent ($9,000). They asked me to lend them the money. So I now have a difficult decision to make. Either I just throw all their things out the door and change the door lock and let them solve their own problems or I get them to write a promissory note and lend them the money. If I take the first option, I don't know if I will break the law because I am not sure what their legal rights are. If I take the second option, I am worried they will not honor their promise and I lose my money.
