Jquery Code Modifications: Interactive Elements Addition

I have an existing jQuery code that needs modification. The code is for a dark mode switch, simply adding a class to body which uses a session to remember the selection.
The code currently using a HTML checkbox, I'd like to change this to 2 buttons (dark/light) or a HTML list of the same. The current selection needs to have a active class applied so I can highlight it with CSS.
The final change is I need to have a option to set a default within the code. For example setting the default as darkmode or lightmode.
This is a quick and easy job for anyone experienced with jQuery.
