JavaScript Accordion Menu Modification

The website has a menu, as example;
Menu Item 1 +
Menu Item 2 +
Menu Item 3 +
Currently in order to expand the menu you must click the + sign. We would like to have it expand the menu regardless if the words Menu Item are clicked or if the + is clicked.
~~~> When a Item is clicked currently a new page loads, we need to maintain the menu accordion open even as new page loads
