Create a cookie and display a timer based on it on a wordpress site

This is on a wordpress site;
I have a page with a specific <div> that I want to hide/show according to the following conditions:
Visit the page for the first time = create cookie
If cookie is less than 24 hours old: display counting down timer showing amount of time left until 24h is past, display <div> #1
If cookie is older than 24 hours, hide <div>#1, show <div> #2
Preferably the cookie should be created using javascript/jquery
