Browser Production Game Design Brief
Overview
The University of Bristol is investing in the development of a web-based business simulation game. The simulation is to be used for educational purposes by both teaching students about and assessing students on operations management principles. The game design should replicate a factory production line. The player’s goal is to end with the highest amount of cash after a set amount of in-game time. A basic version of a flash-based game exists. To act as a reference, the image below shows the current game’s front end.

Scope
The project objective is to create a visually stimulating, easily modifiable, 2-D, single player browser simulation game.
The rounds last 10 in-game days. The player is to modify the game between each round. Once the round ends the player is presented with their score, which is the total cash left. The cash is then reset and any products in the production line are removed. The player should be able to fast forward or skip to the end of the round.
There must be 4 production stages. Each production stage must have the following adjustable variables: employee number, quality variance and batch size. Each change in the variables should debit or credit the player accordingly and should change the production rate of the respective work centre. Each employee debits the player for each in-game day (representing a salary). After a product has been completed, it is added to the ‘finished goods warehouse’ and the player is credited with cash for each finished good. The interaction between the production speed and the variables of each work centre should be different. Detailed formulas of their interactions will be provided.
Audience
The game will be played by undergraduate and postgraduate students, fitting the 18+ age range.
Potential game additions and modifications
Adding a global and local score leader board.
Adding an option to increase the in-game duration per round.
Making the game in 3D with detailed animations of each production stage.
