alias java not working in bash ?

PLEASE NOTE: HERE IS THE task

These commands do not work in a script

$ alias insertRecord="java -cp classes/:d_jar/mysql-connector.jar insertRecord "
$
$ insertRecord 55 TAXING_1.2.3.4 APACHE pvcsusr TAXING /VOL1 EJ

error: verifyInsertGet.sh: line 13: insertRecord: command not found

The files are all there
$ ls d_jar/mysql-connector.jar
d_jar/mysql-connector.jar
$ ls classes/insertRecord.class
classes/insertRecord.class
