HERMES WireShare - Gnutella servent in Java for Windows/Mac/Linux

Job ID: 34546550

Budget: $15 – $25 CAD

HERMES WireShare is a cross-platform Gnutella servent (combined server+client) written in Java. It has been under active development for ten years and has recently weathered a move from Java 6 to Java 18. As usual with such a migration, this has "shaken loose a few bolts" and given visibility to several bugs. In addition, WireShare shares history with FrostWire; FrostWire is a fork of LimeWire 4, while WireShare is a continuation of LimeWire 5. The difference is that FrostWire's BitTorrent handling is much superior to that of WireShare; however, BitTorrent is now all that FrostWire does. We wish to produce a "best-of-both-worlds" solution that will seamlessly incorporate flawless BitTorrent handling within a best-in-class Gnutella app.

As to bugs, some reference is made to com.apple.eawt.* methods, which are deprecated and no longer work on macOS. Minor adjustments will need to be made, preferably by a freelancer who is experienced in Java development for Mac; that said, this is very likely a minor bug (the references in question appear only in one short file) and not an overhaul of any sort.

Skills necessary for this project are the ordinary skills of a Java 18 developer. Macintosh experience is HIGHLY desirable, as the com.apple.eawt.* methods will need to be replaced.
