Help Fix An iOS App Resfresh Issue

We have an iOS app for our product but we have a problem that when the app is in the background, the app does not refresh, i.e. it only procsses events when the app is in the forground.
The events are MQTT messages from our product.
If there is an iOS app specialist who have developed apps that process events while in the background we would appreciate the help and may have a lot more work.
