EcoPal - Carbon Emission Tracker App

The app is an interactive carbon emission tracker aiming to encourage millennials to become more environmentally conscious by reducing their daily carbon footprint. It allows users to set a personal target and record their daily emissions. In addition, the app will be embedded with a special feature that allows users to share their daily carbon footprint to various social media platforms, which allows users to challenge their friends in an emission reduction friendly competition. This community-first tool will also include forums where users can learn tips that help minimize carbon emissions and save money by doing so. This feature eventually will create social interactions and motivation among users - ultimately improving both their carbon emission and cities’ atmospheres at large.
The app should have a starting page for preliminary questionnaire:
1. What transportation mode do they use often? (e.g. bus, train, bicycle, walking, etc.)
2. How long do you travel on average daily? (can be in time or distance)
3. How many flights do you take each year? (divided into three categories)
a. Short flights - less than 3 hours
b. Medium flights - between 3 to 6 hours
c. Long flights - more than 6 hours
Based on the data they’ve input, the app will calculate the users’ carbon footprint by multiplying the transport mode and distance or time of the journey with the carbon emission multiplier. For example, A user that uses a bus as transport mode and travels 30 km (or equivalent to 30 minutes) in a day would have a carbon emission footprint of 24 660, since the carbon emission multiplier of the bus provided by the app is 822x (g/km).
