Fireplace renovation help

Hi everyone! I am just about to tackle a living room renovation but not sure how to make the fireplace area more modern. I will be painting all the walls white and changing out the baseboards to a modern look (white as well). The flooring will be a light grey/white oak look. I am painting the grills on the fireplace to be black. I just am stuck on how I should finish the rest of the fire place mantel. Any input or pictures would be greatly appreciated :)
