Project Description

I’m looking for an experienced electronics or instrumentation engineer to design and build a small calibration coil system that generates a known magnetic field for laboratory measurements.

The device will be used to calibrate a sensor that detects short, weak magnetic pulses (~1 ms, ~10 nT), so it needs to support time-varying fields up to about 1 kHz.

Requirements
Build a circular coil or Helmholtz coil (5–10 cm size)
Use non-magnetic materials
Include a simple drive circuit (MOSFET or similar)
Include a precision current measurement (sense resistor + output)
Provide outputs for monitoring the current waveform
Ensure it works with short pulses (~1 ms)
Deliverables
Fully assembled working device
Basic wiring schematic
Documentation of coil size, number of turns, and how to calculate the magnetic field
Budget: $750 to $1.5K

Preferred Experience:
Analog electronics or instrumentation
Coil design or electromagnetic systems

This is for a research setup, so accuracy and clear documentation are more important than appearance or complexity.
