Create 5 gig posters in adobe illustrator
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
Limited 3 to 5 colors because each color requires an additional application of paint in the silkscreening process.
Choose 5 artists/bands to design gig posters for in Illustrator. I use the words “design for” because the artist and their fans are the clients in this project, so your poster designs need to be a creative interpretation of visuals for the client and it needs to also reflect and relate to the artist/band–IRL the artist/band would need to sign off on the design before production. It should not be a copy of album art, but a new thing that somehow relates to their brand as an artist.
The research part of any design job is to look at previous designs relevant to your client and do something that is on-brand for them while also being new/innovative. Also, listening to each artist’s music while designing can further help inform your process. What I hope that you find is that the feel of music can be translated visually because in design sounds and words naturally seek visual expression.
Each design must include:
Text for Artist/Band Name
Text for Venue and Date
Image composition for the theme of the poster.
Background elements to add interest. This could be a visual pattern, abstract shapes, or a visual scene that can work with the rest of the composition.
PROCESS:
Do Google image searches for your artist/bands to get a sense of their visual aesthetic. Do not copy or sample any existing media of the artist for the poster.
Use the tabloid preset when you start your project. After this, use the artboard tool (Object>Artboard) and create 4 additional artboards for a total of 5. Be sure to create a new layer for each of the artboards.
Use a single color scheme for each poster. (5 colors not including black & white). Include a screenshot of your color scheme in the illustrator file so that you can add it to your swatches.
After setting up your initial composition using the pen tool and typographical elements you may use/add the live trace function to work with photographic images. Two constraints: no actual images can be left in the final versions–all must be vector and any vectorized image needs to conform to your color scheme, so you will need to limit the colors to 5 in the Image Trace panel and work with the Recolor Artwork function if you want to change them together as a color scheme.
Experiment with texture. By default, illustrator/vector images appear clean/perfect and thus lack tactile qualities. You can bring texture into your design by using fonts that have a patterned quality. You can also add texture through the effects applied. Lastly, you can select any object and choose a brush to change the stroke to create a more tactile edge to your object.
Consider the typography/image relationship and how this conveys the spirit of the artist/band you are designing for. Use no more than 2 different fonts and notice how they interact. USE YOUR CUSTOM FONTS or go back to dafont.com and find something specific for each project!
