Ballistic Vest Impact Simulation Modeling

Budget: $30 – $250 USD

I need an experienced CAE specialist to help me finish my final-year mechanical engineering project: a fully detailed finite-element model of a small-caliber projectile striking a multilayer bullet-resistant vest. I have already defined the basic geometry and material stack-up in HyperMesh, and the plan is to solve everything with the explicit OpenRadioss solver.

What I still require is expert guidance—and hands-on modelling work—so that the simulation reliably predicts:

• penetration depth and overall armor performance,
• the complete stress and strain fields inside the ceramic and composite layers (stress distribution, strain distribution),
• projectile behaviour such as velocity reduction, deformation, and residual velocity,
• correct energy accounting (kinetic, internal, contact, hourglass, etc.) to prove numerical stability.

Scope of work
1. Refine and, if needed, rebuild the mesh in HyperMesh (solid ceramic, layered composites, bonded and contact interfaces).
2. Assign robust material cards and failure models available in OpenRadioss for brittle ceramics and ductile fibre composites.
3. Define accurate contacts (projectile/armor, inter-ply, backing plate) and boundary conditions.
4. Run and iterate explicit simulations until the hourglass energy remains within acceptable limits and the global energy balance is stable.
5. Post-process with HyperView to obtain high-quality plots of the stress and strain fields, penetration depth history, and projectile residual velocity.
6. Provide a concise report summarising setup, assumptions, key results, and recommendations for further optimisation.

Acceptance criteria
• Energy plots show conservation within ±5 %.
• Penetration depth and residual velocity fall within documented test data or credible literature ranges.
• No negative volume or premature element deletion unrelated to failure criteria.
• Clean, well-commented .rad decks so I can rerun or tweak parameters later.
