HVAC Mechanical Design – Repurpose Existing 4-Pipe FCUs for New Office Layout + IES Heat Loss/Gain Calculations
Project - Washington House – Office Refurbishment / New First Floor Layout
We require an experienced UK-based mechanical/HVAC design engineer to produce a design package for repurposing the existing 4-pipe fan coil unit system to suit a new office layout.
The project involves retaining and reusing the existing 4-pipe FCUs where possible, reviewing their suitability against the new room layouts, carrying out full heat loss and heat gain calculations using IES, and producing a coordinated HVAC design for the revised office fit-out.
The current proposed layout includes multiple cellular offices/suites, quiet pods, open kitchen areas, comms room, meeting rooms and ancillary spaces. The tender drawing notes that the general arrangement is indicative and subject to final measured details, with wall construction assumed at 100 mm and 2700 mm high from raised floor to suspended ceiling.
**Scope of Works Required**
The appointed designer is to carry out the following:
1. Review the existing 4-pipe FCU installation and assess how the units can be reused, relocated or re-ducted to serve the new office layout.
2. Carry out full room-by-room heat loss and heat gain calculations using IES or equivalent approved software.
3. Confirm heating and cooling loads for each office, meeting room, pod, kitchen, comms room and ancillary area.
4. Review existing FCU duties against calculated loads and confirm whether each unit is suitable, oversized, undersized or requires replacement/supplementary cooling.
5. Produce a revised FCU schedule showing:
* Existing FCU reference
* Proposed room/area served
* Heating duty required
* Cooling duty required
* Available FCU duty
* Air volume
* Proposed duct connections
* Grille/diffuser quantities
* Any required modifications or replacement units
6. Design the secondary ductwork from the FCUs to suit the new office layout, including revised supply and return air routes, grille/diffuser positions, transfer air paths and access requirements.
7. Review and redesign the primary fresh air ductwork from the existing AHUs to suit the new office layout.
8. Confirm fresh air rates to each area based on occupancy, room use and relevant UK guidance.
9. Produce duct sizing and airflow calculations for the revised primary fresh air system.
10. Identify any required new volume control dampers, fire dampers, access panels, balancing dampers and attenuators.
11. Provide pressure drop calculations where required and confirm suitability of the existing AHUs/fans for the revised duct layout.
12. Review controls zoning requirements for the FCUs, including any new room controllers, BMS amendments or control valve modifications required.
13. Produce mechanical design drawings in AutoCAD/PDF format showing:
* FCU locations
* Supply and return ductwork
* Fresh air ductwork from existing AHUs
* Grilles/diffusers
* Dampers
* Controls zoning
* Notes for installation
14. Provide a design report summarising assumptions, calculations, equipment suitability, limitations and recommended works.
15. Provide a clear list of installation works required for pricing by the mechanical contractor.
