Use the "Geography of Slavery" website (above) to complete this assignment. You are going to search the runaway advertisements on this "Geography of Slavery" website (a primary source). Use these primary sources to write 350-450 word essay in which you explain 2 things you learn or can conclude about 18th century indentured servants, apprentices, and/or enslaved people based on the evidence you uncovered on the website. What are two things we can learn about indentured servants, apprentices, and/or enslaved people from these primary sources?

Search the website for either runaway slaves; runaway indentured servants; runaway apprentices; or a mix.
Be sure you know the difference between indentured servants (4-7 years of labor in exchange for passage to the New World), slaves (unfree, property for life), and apprentices (young people being trained in a skill).
*Limit your search to the 18th century, specifically 1700-1775.
You may choose to limit your time period as part of your search. For example, you may wish to search only 1730-1760 or some other dates. If you do, great--just explain that you did so in your essay.
*Identify 12 individuals in your searches. Download and fill in this spreadsheet Fill out this spreadsheet based on those 12 individuals and include the spreadsheet when you submit your essay.
Use your search, especially the 12 individuals on your spreadsheet to explain 2 things you can conclude or 2 things you learned about the 18th century and the indentured servants, apprentices, and/or enslaved people of that time period.
Ideas you might consider for this assignment; these are just ideas; you may have other approaches:
1. Do you notice any change between 1700 and 1775? Did ads for one kind of runaway become more common? Did the things the ads said, or the information they gave, change over time? Was there any evidence of changes in attitudes over time?
2. Does the ad guess why the person(s) ran away? What motivation is assigned, and does this change over time?
3. What kind of unfree labor are you seeing most often? Apprentices? Slaves? Servants? Is it sometimes hard to tell? Does it become easier over time to tell if the runaway is a slave, an apprentice, or a servant?
4. How old were the runaways? Did their age change over time? Where were they from?
5. What kinds of marks distinguished them? Did they try to disguise themselves?
6. Did the runaways seem to have any resources--that is, were they poor and ragged, or well dressed? Did they seem to have help, or were they alone?
7. Was there a reward offered? Did it vary depending on the person?
8. Did the runaways appear to have any skills?
9. How often did the ads give the race or color of the runaway? Was it sometimes hard to tell?
10. Is there any consistent pattern to their movements—that is, are most of them escaping from one place to another? Does that pattern change?
*Grading: You’ll be graded on how well you use historical thinking, how well you support your conclusions with evidence, and how clearly you write. Use information from your spreadsheet (your search) to support your conclusions.
