Capstone Project
Budget: $30 – $250 USD
1. Identify a current civil rights issue that interests you and identify a problem that needs attention. It could be about criminal justice, voting rights, the difference in how COVID is affecting communities of color, discrimination in education or housing, etc. Be as specific about your issue as you can be.
2. Explain why the issue you identified in #1 is a problem. Include facts and statistics to support your position.
3. Explain what you think should be done about the problem. In other words, what is the solution that you would suggest? Be specific; don't say, for instance, "spend more money on housing (or education)." What, specifically, would you suggest the money go towards?
4. Identify a policymaker — such as a member of the U.S. Congress or Alabama Congress, the Mayor of Mobile, the school board, etc. — that you think could play a role in helping address the problem you’ve identified. Then explain why you think this person could be helpful. In other words, is your issue one that is best solved by the national government? The state government? Local government? Explain your reasoning.
5. Write a draft letter to that person (or those persons) that you identified. That letter should be 4 paragraphs. The first identifies who you are and why you’re writing; the second explains why the issue you mentioned in the first paragraph is a problem; the third outlines your proposed solution; and the fourth thanks the person you’re writing for their consideration of your views.
