The Role: Backend Rewrite for a Large Community Platform GraphQL API
This developer role is focused on a critical project: rebuilding the existing Phoenix/Elixir backend of the large, high-traffic community and discussion platform API into a modern, clean Symfony GraphQL API Platform version.

You'll be working in an async-first (almost no meetings!) 100% remote team that values an academic and positive tone in collaboration and problem-solving.

Key Opportunities
Lead the full backend rewrite of an GraphQL API that supports a product used by millions of parents
Leverage modern tooling, including AI-assisted code exploration and generation, to efficiently deliver a high-quality codebase
Work within a tech stack that defaults to open-source, self-hosted solutions

Responsibilities
The Senior Symfony Backend Developer is responsible for:
Codebase Exploration and Translation: Analyzing the existing Elixir/Phoenix
codebase to understand its structure, logic, and data models, and accurately translating this functionality into the new Symfony API.
New Codebase Development: Designing and implementing the new API using PHP/Symfony and API Platform, ensuring a clean, scalable, and maintainable architecture.
Testing Framework: Establishing a robust and comprehensive testing framework as a critical, early-stage component of the new API.
Collaboration and Delivery: Working with the team to integrate with the new frontend and delivering a fully functional, production-ready backend API.

Requirements
Applicants for this contract position should:
Have at least 4 years of professional experience with PHP/Symfony
Have demonstrable experience designing and building APIs, preferably with API Platform
Possess strong proficiency in setting up and implementing comprehensive testing strategies (e.g., unit, functional, integration tests)
Be comfortable leveraging AI-assisted tools for codebase exploration and generation
Be a strong, independent problem-solver capable of translating existing business logic into a new, performant technical solution

Great to Have
Experience with Elixir/Phoenix for better understanding of the existing codebase
Experience with containerization and cloud deployment

Candidate Screening Process
Given the technical nature of this rewrite and our async-first way of working, we will be leveraging candidate screening exercises to start the interview process. These exercises will focus on your ability to work with Symfony and API design principles.
