A novel entitled That Night on Montmoro
This, my third novel, set in the early 2000s and between the
8th and 12th centuries is at once a love story, a thriller, and an examination on the limits of one man’s ability to change history.
The three main protagonists are: the Peruvian American Lucia de la Serna White, Missouri-born Judah Apple, and the Persian Abu l-Hasan 'Ali Ibn Nafi', better known as Zyriab, who moved as a young man to Córdoba in what was then al Andalus, found fame as a musician, a tastemaker, cook and adviser and friend to the Caliph Abd al-Rahman II. And most importantly, a Sufi.
When he invaded my book, unbidden, he changed its trajectory dramatically. He took it from the village of Maya on the Spanish island of Myotraga to Moorish Córdoba, across the Spanish mainland and on to Los Angeles, Chicago and New York.
Along the way my protagonists will be kidnapped by Al Qaeda terrorists, invent a new form of popular music ¬– Sufi Soul – one will exhibit in a New York gallery and, eventually, two will find peace in Maya.
The reader will learn, incidentally, much about Sufism, the mystic form if Islam, and Moorish medieval Spain. And be left with a portfolio of recipes from the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and an insight into the poetry of Islamic Spain.
