Illustration Brief for Children’s Book Series Level-1 (Ages 3-4)
Background
We are a family-run business dedicated to early childhood education. The educational vision is spearheaded by Jumana Al Qabbani, a well-known teacher specializing in this age group. She has authored 12 children’s school books that are taught in many schools and sold in major bookstores.
Beyond books, our business is expanding into digital learning, with a state-of-the-art educational app currently in development. This app will complement our books by offering interactive experiences that enhance children’s learning and development.
Project Overview:
We are developing a series of children’s stories where Level-1 is for ages 3-4, and level-2 is aimed to continue for children ages 5-7.
This project is for Level-1 (3-4 years old), which is made up of 6 books. The books will be interactive, encouraging parent-child engagement through activities integrated into the story.
Illustration & Production Style:
The books will incorporate interactive elements, such as:
Textured surfaces (e.g., soft fur, rough tree bark, smooth water)
Lift-the-flap windows for surprises or learning moments
Pull tabs or sliders to reveal hidden details
Pop-ups or layered pages to enhance engagement.
We are looking for the following in the illustration style that suit this age group and align with the interactive nature of the book. The style should be:
Simple, expressive, and engaging
Bright and warm color palettes to hold attention
Soft, rounded shapes to create a friendly and safe visual environment
Number of characters:
1. 6-7 human main characters
2. 4-5 human secondary characters
3. 10 Basic animals (chickens, cats, dogs, etc)
Each of the 6 stories of this level (3-4 years old) will have 12 pages.
Estimated Budget: $1,500 but it’s a competitive bidding process so we are evaluating multiple artists’ proposals and sample work.
Your proposal should contain:
Pages 2 and 4 of the below sample story.
Share the pages with two different styles of illustration.
Also share your lump sum price for the Project in total (Level-1).
Here is a sample story:
A Day at the Zoo - Language Development
(Family at Home) p. 1
Sarah woke up excited because today she and her family would be going to the zoo for the first time.
p. 2
What animal would you like, Sarah?
The sheep, Dad
(In the garden) p. 3
(Where is the sheep?) said Sarah
Here is the birds section, do you know the names of the birds here? (said the mother)
This is the hen
p. 4
And this is the duck
Well done, Sarah!
*Exercise*
-Have a child name any simple objects in the room-
_
The “exercise” section is very important to us and we are interested to know your creative solutions to integrating exercises in the books. As mentioned above, they could be in a pull-out a hidden section for example.
